Thomas Richard "Tom" Harkin (born November 19, 1939) is the junior (Seniority in the United States Senate) United States Senator (United States Senate) from Iowa and a member of the Democratic Party (Democratic Party (United States)). First elected to the Senate in 1984, Harkin was a candidate for his partys presidential nomination in 1992 (Democratic Party (United States) presidential primaries, 1992), and is currently chairman (Chair (official)) of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions).
