Timothy Michael "Tim" Kaine (born February 26, 1958) was the 70th (List of Governors of Virginia) Governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010, and is the current chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was elected governor in 2005, after serving as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and Mayor of Richmond, Virginia (List of mayors of Richmond, Virginia).
As governor, he was a member of the National Governors Association, the Southern Governors Association, and the Democratic Governors Association. Before entering into Virginia politics, Kaine was a lawyer in Richmond, Virginia, and worked with the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) as a Catholic (Catholic Church) missionary in Honduras. Kaine endorsed the Democratic nominee, now President Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election (United States presidential election, 2008) and was considered a possible choice to be Obamas running mate, but was not ultimately chosen. Virginia State law does not allow the governor to succeed himself; therefore Governor Kaine was not permitted to run for re-election after his first term in office.
