Timothy William "Tim" Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated American (United States) film director, film producer, writer and artist. He is famous for his dark, quirky-themed movies such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow (Sleepy Hollow (film)), Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007 film)), and for blockbusters (blockbuster (entertainment)) such as Pee-wees Big Adventure, Batman (Batman (1989 film)), Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes (Planet of the Apes (2001 film)), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (film)) and Alice in Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland (2010 film)), his most recent film, that is currently the highest-grossing film of 2010 (2010 in film#Highest-grossing films) as well as the fifth highest-grossing film of all time (List of highest grossing films#Worldwide highest-grossing films). Among Burtons many collaborators are his friends Johnny Depp, musician Danny Elfman (who has composed for all but five of the films Burton has directed and/or produced) and domestic partner (domestic partnership) Helena Bonham Carter. He also wrote and illustrated the poetry book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, published in 1997 (1997 in literature), and a compilation of his drawings, entitled The Art of Tim Burton, was released in 2009 (2009 in art).

Burton has directed 14 films as of 2010, and has produced 10 as of 2009. His next films, a film adaptation of soap opera Dark Shadows and a remake of his short Frankenweenie, are to be released in 2011 (2011 in film).
