The Legend of Bagger Vance is a 2000 (2000 in film) American film directed by Robert Redford and starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. It was based on the same-titled 1995 book by Steven Pressfield and takes place in the U.S. state of Georgia (Georgia (U.S. state)) in 1931. This was Jack Lemmons final film before his death in 2001.
On release, the film, was attacked by several African American commentators and reviewers for using the "magical negro" as a plot device. Since the films release, some in the mainstream media have also described the film as flawed and racially insensitive.
