Richard Alexander Ankiel (IPA-en??ki?lpron; born July 19, 1979) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who is currently playing for the Kansas City Royals. He bats and throws left-handed.
Ankiel was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals up to the 2009 season (2009 Major League Baseball season). He was a pitcher until 2004 (2004 St. Louis Cardinals season), when he switched to the outfield after losing his ability to throw strikes consistently. After honing his skills as a hitter and fielder in the minor league system, he was called up to the Cardinals on August 9 and made his major league debut as an outfielder in a game versus the San Diego Padres in St. Louis (St Louis, Missouri) . He played right field. In the seventh inning he faced Padres right-hander Doug Brocail, Rick Ankiel joined the legendary Babe Ruth and Clint Hartung as the only players to hit home runs both as a pitcher and as a position player.
As a Cardinal, Rick Ankiel hit 47 home runs as an outfielder (he hit two as a pitcher).
After a mediocre 2009 season in which he hit (Batting average) just .231 and 11 home runs in 122 games, Rick Ankiel became a free agent.
Rick is a native of Fort Pierce (Fort Pierce, Florida), Florida.
