Philip Douglas "Phil" Jackson (born September 17, 1945) is a former American professional basketball player and the current coach (Coach (basketball)) of the Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His reputation was established as head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 1989 through 1998; during his tenure, Chicago won six NBA titles. His next team, the Los Angeles Lakers, won four NBA titles from 2000 to 2009. In total, Jackson has won 10 NBA titles as a coach (List of NBA championship head coaches), surpassing a record he had shared with Red Auerbach. Currently, he is the winner of the most championships in NBA history (as a player and a head coach combined), breaking the tie between him and Bill Russell after the Los Angeles Lakers won the 2009 NBA Finals over the Orlando Magic four games to one. Jackson had won two rings as a player with the New York Knicks in 1970 and 1973.
Jackson is known for his use of Tex Winters triangle offense as well as a holistic approach to coaching that is influenced by Eastern philosophy, earning him the nickname "Zen Master (Zen master)". (Jackson cites Robert Pirsigs book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance as one of the major guiding forces in his life.) He also applies Native American spiritual practices as documented in his book Sacred Hoops. He is the author of several candid books about his teams and his basketball strategies. Jackson is also a recipient of the state of North Dakotas Roughrider Award. In 2007 Jackson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
In 1996, as part of celebrations for the National Basketball Associations 50th anniversary, Jackson was named one of the 10 greatest coaches in league history.
