Before being elected Speaker in the 110th Congress (110th United States Congress), she was the House Minority Leader (Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives) from 2003 to 2007, holding the post during the 108th (108th United States Congress) and 109th Congresses (109th United States Congress).

A member of the Democratic Party (Democratic Party (United States)), Pelosi has represented the 8th Congressional District (Californias 8th congressional district) of California, which consists of four-fifths of the City and County of San Francisco (San Francisco), since 1987. The district was numbered as the 5th (Californias 5th congressional district) during Pelosis first three terms in the House.

Pelosi is the first female Speaker of the House. She is also the first Californian and first Italian-American to hold the post. As Speaker, Pelosi is second in the line of presidential succession (United States presidential line of succession), following Vice President Joe Biden, which makes her the highest-ranking female politician in American history.
