New Meadowlands Stadium is a stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the New York metropolitan area. It is the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets of the National Football League which is located right next to the old Giants stadium. The stadium replaced Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which was home to the Giants since 1976 and the Jets since 1984. Like its predecessor, the new stadium will be the only NFL stadium shared by two teams. However, unlike Giants Stadium in which the Jets were a junior partner, the new stadium is a 50/50 partnership between both NFL (National Football League) teams. The stadium is administered by the New Meadowlands Stadium Company, LLC. Meadowlands Stadium opened on April 10, 2010 when it featured the Big City Classic lacrosse tournament. At a construction cost of approximately $1.6 billion, it is the most expensive stadium (List of worlds most expensive single objects) ever built.
As determined by a coin toss by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the Giants will host the first NFL regular season game in the stadiums history on Sunday, September 12, 2010. The following evening, the Jets will hold their home opener, to be shown on Monday Night Football. On May 25, 2010, it was announced that Super Bowl XLVIII will be played at this stadium, the first time a Super Bowl will be played in the New York/New Jersey region.
