Maxine Waters (born Maxine Moore Carr; August 15, 1938) is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991, representing Californias 35th congressional district (map). She resides in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles, which is approximately six miles west of downtown (Downtown Los Angeles). She is the most senior (List of current members of the United States House of Representatives by seniority) of the 12 African American (African Americans in the United States Congress) women (Women in the United States House of Representatives) currently serving in the United States Congress.
Her husband, Sidney Williams (Sid Williams) played professional football in the NFL and is a former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas (United States Ambassador to the Bahamas).
