Mauna Kea (pron-en?m??n? ?ke?.? or IPA-en?ma?n? ?ke?.? in English, IPA-all?moun? ?k?j? in Hawaiian (Hawaiian phonology)) is an inactive volcano in the U.S. state of Hawaii, one of five volcanoes which together form the island of Hawaii (Hawaii (island)). Mauna Kea, according to some etymologists is a contraction of Mauna-o-Wakea, meaning in English, "Mountain of the deity Wakea."Citation neededdate=January 2010 The modern form, "Mauna Kea," means "white mountain" in the Hawaiian language, a reference to its summit (summit (topography)) being regularly covered by snow in winter.Citation neededdate=January 2010

The peak (summit (topography)) of Mauna Kea is Convert13803ftm above mean (average) sea level, about Convert100ftm taller than neighboring Mauna Loa and about Convert30000ftm above its base on the floor (seabed) of the Pacific Ocean. By this measurement, Mauna Kea is the worlds tallest mountain, taller than Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain above sea level.

Puu Wekiu, traditionally known as Pu?u o Kukahau?ula, is the highest of the numerous cinder cones on the summit plateau. It is also the highest point in the state. Mauna Kea can be reached via the Saddle Road (Hawaii Route 200).
