Percy Mahendra "Mahinda" Rajapaksa (Sinhala (Sinhala language) Unicode?????? ???????, IPA2ma?hind? ?ra????pak??pron Tamil (Tamil Language) ?????? ???????; born November 18, 1945) is the 6th and current President of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. A lawyer by profession, Rajapaksa was first elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 1970, and served as prime minister (Prime Minister of Sri Lanka) from April 6, 2004 until his victory in the 2005 Presidential election (Sri Lankan presidential election, 2005). He was sworn in for a six-year term as president on November 19, 2005. He was re-elected (Sri Lankan presidential election, 2010) for a second term in office on January 27, 2010. He was conferred with two Honorary Doctorates (Honorary Degree). First one is a Doctor of Law by the University of Colombo on September 6, 2009. Second degree was awarded by the Peoples? Friendship University of Russia on February 6, 2010 for his contribution for world peace and outstanding success against defeating terrorism.
