Juwan Antonio Howard (born February 7, 1973 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American (United States) professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Although he is not currently signed to a performance contract for the 2010-11 season (2010-11 NBA season), the 2010-11 season is the fourth and final year of a buyout by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was drafted 5th overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. He is a former All-Star (NBA All-Star Game) and All-NBA power forward (Power forward (basketball)). He had previously starred as an All-American member of both the Michigan Wolverines mens basketball team during the Fab Five (Fab Five (University of Michigan)) years and the Chicago Vocational Career Academy team. In addition to being an All-American in high school, he was an honors student.
He was a member of the University of Michigan Wolverines (Michigan Wolverines) Fab Five (along with Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson) that reached the 1992 (1992 NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Tournament) and 1993 (1993 NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Tournament) NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Mens Division I Basketball Championship (NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championship) games as both freshmen and sophomores. Although most Michigan Wolverines mens basketball records from 1992–1998 have been forfeited due to NCAA sanctions, Howards 1993–94 All-American (1994 NCAA Mens Basketball All-Americans) season was not.
During his rookie year as a professional, he became the first NBA player to graduate on time with his class after leaving college early to play in the NBA. After one season as an All-rookie player and a second as an All-NBA performer, he became the first NBA player to sign a $100 million dollar contract. Although he continued to be a productive starter, he never again performed at an All-Star level and towards the end of his contract he was traded at the NBA trade deadline twice to make salary cap room. He has played 16 seasons in the NBA, including 5 for playoff teams. During his first 5 seasons in the NBA, he averaged 19.3 points per game, but has only averaged 17 points in three seasons since. He last started over half of his games played and averaged over 30 minutes during the 2005-06 NBA season.
