Hiroshima???Hiroshima-shi (Audioja-Hiroshima.ogglisten) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Ch?goku region of western Honsh?, the largest island of Japan. It became the first city in history destroyed by a nuclear weapon when the United States of America dropped an atomic bomb (Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) on it at 8:15am on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II. Hiroshima gained municipality status on April 1, 1889, and on April 1, 1980, became a designated city (City designated by government ordinance). The citys current mayor is Tadatoshi Akiba.
