Hawaiian Islands (lang-hawMokupuni o Hawai?i) are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean, extending some 1,500 miles (2,400 km (kilometre)) from the island of Hawaiokinai (Hawaii (island)) in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll (the northwesternmost island in Hawaii is Green Island (Green Island, Hawaii), which is joined to the Kure Atoll). Excluding Midway (Midway Atoll), which is an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Hawaiian Islands form the U.S. (United States) state of Hawaii. Once known as the "Sandwich Islands", the archipelago now takes its name from the largest island in the cluster.

The islands are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic (volcano) activity over a hotspot (Hotspot (geology)) in the Earths mantle.
