He is a former Defence Secretary (Secretary of State for Defence), Transport Secretary (Secretary of State for Transport), Leader of the House of Commons and Labour Party (Labour Party (UK)) Chief Whip, and served as the Member of Parliament (Parliament of the United Kingdom) (MP) for Ashfield (Ashfield (UK Parliament constituency)) from 1992 until 2010.
