Elijah Muhammad (Born Elijah Poole October 7, 1897 — February 25, 1975) was an African American religious leader and activist. He was the leader of the Nation of Islam organization from 1934 until his death at age 77. Muhammad was a mentor to Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, and boxer (Boxing) Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., whom he renamed Muhammad Ali.
