Derrick Martell Rose (born October 4, 1988) is an American professional basketball player who is currently playing for the Chicago Bulls of the NBA (National Basketball Association).

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Rose learned the game of basketball from his three older brothers. In high school, he won two state championships and was rated by scouts as the top point guard prospect in the country after graduation. He played collegiately for the University of Memphis Tigers (Memphis Tigers mens basketball) and reached the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) national championship game (2008 NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Tournament) in 2008. Shortly after, Rose declared for the 2008 NBA Draft and was selected first overall (List of first overall NBA draft picks) by his hometown Chicago Bulls. In his first year of professional basketball, Rose was voted the Rookie of the Year (NBA Rookie of the Year) and was selected to the All-Rookie Team (NBA All-Rookie Team). In only his second season, Rose was selected as an All-Star for the first time for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game.

In 2009, an NCAA investigation revealed that Roses SAT scores had been invalidated, making him retroactively ineligible to play for Memphis. As a result, the NCAA vacated Memphis entire 2008 season.
