CAMERON APPOINTED NEW BRITISH PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON has been appointed Britain's new Prime Minister following the resignation of GORDON BROWN. The 43 year old becomes the youngest British leader in over 200 years. Cameron's Conservative Party won the most seats in last week's (ends07May10) general election, but not an overall majority. Outside his new Downing Street home in London moments ago, Cameron confirmed he has reached an agreement to form a coalition with the Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg. Cameron's appointment, following a Tuesday morning (11May10) meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, will bring new life to Downing Street - the politician and his wife Samantha are expecting their third child in September (10). David William Donald Cameron (pron-en?km(?)r?n; born 9 October 1966) is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader (Leaders of the Conservative Party) of the Conservative Party (Conservative Party (UK)).
Cameron studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford (University of Oxford), gaining a first class honours degree. He then joined the Conservative Research Department and became Special Adviser (Special advisers in the United Kingdom) to Norman Lamont (Norman Lamont, Baron Lamont of Lerwick), and then to Michael Howard. He was Director of Corporate Affairs at Carlton Communications for seven years.
A first candidacy for Parliament (British Parliament) at Stafford (Stafford (UK Parliament constituency)) in 1997 ended in defeat but Cameron was elected in 2001 (United Kingdom general election, 2001) as the Member of Parliament (Parliament of the United Kingdom) for the Oxfordshire constituency of Witney (Witney (UK Parliament constituency)). He was promoted to the Opposition (Official Opposition (United Kingdom)) front bench (Frontbencher) two years later, and rose rapidly to become head of policy co-ordination during the 2005 general election campaign (United Kingdom general election, 2005).
With a public image of a young, moderate candidate who would appeal to young voters, he won the Conservative leadership election (Conservative Party (UK) leadership election, 2005) in 2005. His early leadership saw the Conservative Party establish an opinion poll lead over Tony Blairs Labour (Labour Party (UK)); the first in over ten years. Although they fell briefly behind when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, under Camerons leadership the Conservatives have been consistently ahead of Labour (Labour Party (UK)) in the polls.
In the 2010 general election (United Kingdom general election, 2010) held on 6 May, the Conservatives gained a plurality (Plurality (voting)) of seats in a hung parliament. Brown resigned and Cameron was appointed Prime Minister on 11 May 2010, at the head of a coalition (coalition government) between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. At the age of 43, Cameron became the youngest British Prime Minister since the Earl of Liverpool (Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool) 198 years earlier. The Cameron Ministry is the first coalition government in the United Kingdom since the Second World War (World War II).
