The Consol Energy Center is an arena under construction in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The arena will be the second home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the citys National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. It is expected to complete construction on August 1, 2010, and open for the 2010-11 NHL season. The arena will replace the Penguins current arena, Mellon Arena, which was built in 1961. A ceremonial ground-breaking ceremony was held on August 14, 2008. The arena will attempt to be the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold-certified NHL arena. The arena is named for CONSOL Energy, which purchased the naming rights in December 2008.
