Alvin Michael Greene (born August 30, 1977) is the Democratic Party (Democratic Party (United States))s nominee in the 2010 United States Senate election (United States Senate election in South Carolina, 2010) in South Carolina. He is the first African-American to be nominated for U.S. Senate by a major party in South Carolina since Reconstruction (Reconstruction era of the United States). Greene faces incumbent Republican (Republican Party (United States)) Senator Jim DeMint and Green Party (Green Party (United States)) candidate Tom Clements in the general election.
Greene won the Democratic primary race against candidate Vic Rawl on June 8, 2010, with 59% of the vote, despite very limited campaigning and campaign spending, no website, and no yard sign (Lawn sign)s. The executive committee of the South Carolina Democratic Party voted 55 to 10 to reject Rawls request for a new Senate primary after questions were raised about Greenes surprise victory.
Greene graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2000 with a degree in political science, and is a United States military veteran who served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force before receiving an involuntary honorable discharge in 2009. He is currently unemployed and lives with and cares for his father in Manning (Manning, South Carolina), roughly halfway between Columbia (Columbia, South Carolina) and Charleston (Charleston, South Carolina).
