The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world. It is a larger relative of the Common Snapping Turtle. The epithet (Epithet#Biological_nomenclature) temminckii is in honor of Dutch zoologist (zoology) Coenraad Jacob Temminck.
